[文摘]:The hydrodynamic design and the prediction of performance characteristics of ducted thruster systems are discussed from a preliminary design point of view. The vehicle discussed includes a propulsion system that provides motion in five degrees of freedom. It consists of a single conventional screw propeller, stern plane and rudder or ring shroud, and four ducted screw propellers arranged in forward and aft pairs. On the basis of available theoretical and experimental data, procedures are developed for establishing power requirements, for sizing the thrust devices and for predicting their transient and steady state performance characteristics. The ducted thruster system provides forces and moments at rates sufficient to meet hovering requirements in currents of the order of one knot. A comparison with other systems shows that the current magnitude and the systems efficiency are major performance criteria to be considered in a selection. (Author)
